When mining stops

April 24, 2017

Trident Mining and Industrial Corporation in Narra, Palawan is gone. What remains are the scars it has left on the land, but at least nature is reclaiming the former mining site, albeit slowly and probably not as diverse as it used to be.

While walking around the site's man-made crater-turned lake, the dead leaves underneath my feet rustled and brought forth this delicate serpent, most likely Dendrelaphis levitoni, a species endemic to Palawan. One grab, a few photos, and more bites later, I set it free on one of the Casuarina trees fringing the lake- and hoped that more animals will return and finally call this once-violated land home.
