A landmark in Kiangan

July 11, 2017

St. Joseph Church in Kiangan, Ifugao is said to be the oldest church in the town and was inaugurated on December 29, 1956 under the leadership of Belgian missionary Jerome Moerman who served as parish priest from 1910 to 1958; Kiangan itself is the oldest town in the province and has been variously known as 'Kiyyangan' and 'Quiangan' throughout its history. Since the mid-1880's, various missions have been sent to Kiangan to convert the locals to the Catholic religion, but these efforts were repeatedly quelled by outbreaks of malaria and those who want to maintain their traditional beliefs, mostly by setting afire the missionaries' structures. Unrelenting missionary work finally succeeded and culminated in the erection of this church and the adjoining primary and secondary schools.
